A "History" of Giving

For more than 100 years, Brethren Retirement Community has been a vital part of the Greenville area serving nearly 5000 seniors since its doors first opened in 1902. From its early beginnings as an establishment whose mission was “to better provide and care for such brethren and sisters who are incapable of self-maintenance, and indigent and homeless children”, Brethren Retirement Community, a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), has grown to become one of the largest and most well-regarded providers of senior care in Ohio.

From Brethren Retirement Community’s humble beginnings of two brick buildings constructed on donated land, the early Brethren worked tirelessly toward realizing their vision to serve. The first annex was added in 1917, a dining hall in 1941, and a 10,836 square foot addition in 1951. A total of 262,214 square feet were added during the 1960’s and 1970’s. In 1986, visionary planning by the Board of Trustees brought about the design and development of Chestnut Village, Greenville’s premiere senior independent living community, and later, the addition of Mill Ridge Village, a satellite community in Union, Ohio. But perhaps the most important milestone in the history of Brethren Retirement Community, was during the 1990’s when it became certified by the Continuing Care Accreditation Commission (CCAC), a body whose program is based on the belief that accreditation promotes and maintains quality and integrity in the continuing care and retirement community industry.

The growth and advancement of Brethren Retirement Community over the years clearly demonstrates how well the increasing healthcare needs of Greenville’s senior population are being met. As the community’s needs changed and grew, Brethren Retirement Community responded by expanding its services. Doctors were brought on staff, nursing care became more specialized, and Medicare and Medicaid certifications were obtained. Improvements like these were made possible because of the generosity and commitment of the Greenville community and Brethren congregations, who shared the common goal of providing care and services for the community’s senior population. And it is the current and future generosity of people like you that will allow Brethren Retirement Community to remain the thriving establishment it is today.
