Greenville was the site of Fort Greene Ville, built in 1793 by General "Mad Anthony" Wayne.  The Treaty of Greene Ville, which opened the Northwest Territory for settlement, was signed on August 3, 1795 between Anthony and twelve Indian tribes, led by Tecumseh.
