BRC's Rehab to Home Instrumental in Helping Stroke Victim Walk Again

Jack Oswalt is doing things now he hasn't done in thirteen years! Things such as: standing up, walking with a cane, going up and down stairs and yard work. Thirteen years ago, Jack had a stroke that left him paralyzed on the left side. He has been in and out of the hospital several times with many medical issues since then.  He spent almost two months at Brethren Retirement Community's Rehab to Home program recovering.

Jack chose Brethren Retirement Community for rehab and therapy. Why? Jack and his wife of 50 years, Janet, said "Brethren Retirement Community is very friendly and welcoming.  There are a lot of people around to spend time with and get to know." They enjoyed the gift shop, the pond area and especially enjoyed being able to have two meals a day together in the dining room overlooking the pond. "The care at Brethren Retirement Community was great and the nurses and therapy department are very caring and professional.  Sherry and Kelly were two of his nurses that provided extra good care."

Don Quijano from the Therapy Department is excellent and was instrumental in helping Jack get back to standing, walking with a cane, and climbing stairs again. Jack feels it is because of Don he can go up and down the stairs again after 13 years. Jack couldn't stand up when he started therapy; let alone walk or climb stairs. Don continues to work with Jack through outpatient therapy on improving what he can do and on being able to do more. Don attributes Jack's success with this quote, "Acceptance followed by perseverance allows growth".

The Oswalt's feel they have become a better "team" and are closer after Jack's latest experience at Brethren Retirement Community.

An "Ice Cream Party" farewell was held in Jack's honor when he was discharged from Brethren Retirement Community to go home. The Oswalt's were surprised by how many staff from Brethren Retirement Community attended with well wishes!
